The Food Bank of Central New York has been helping to feed the hungry in eleven counties in our community since 1985 by distributing food directly to food insecure children, families and individuals through emergency food programs. In the last year alone, the Food Bank acquired and distributed over 12 million meals.

The Food Bank acquires fresh food from local grocery stores and delivers it the same day to partner agencies who then directly serve those in need in the community. They also partner with local not-for-profits to help provide nutritious meals to children outside of school and education about food safety, sanitation and healthy food preparation at local soup kitchens. Their Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables initiative encourages consumption of healthy foods to prevent obesity, reduce chronic disease and create healthy habits among individuals who are eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly called “food stamps”).

The Food Bank recognizes that the face of hunger is changing in our community, and is present in more families with working adults who are stretching their food budget by using emergency food programs and other services. According to data from Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap, over 11% of Madison County’s population is food insecure, or doesn’t have consistent access to healthy, nutritious food. With funds raised through Madison County Gives, the Food Bank would be able to provide 16,000 meals to food insecure families and individuals living in Madison County this year.
